Job Description: The Technical Writer is primarily responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining the complete lifecycle of technical documentation for complex systems and procedures. This role is critical to ensuring that technical information is communicated with clarity, precision, and accuracy to a wide range of audiences, from operators to senior leadership. The ideal candidate is an expert communicator and documentation professional who also possesses the organizational skills to perform key administrative support functions for the team.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Documentation & Content Development (80%)
Content Creation - Lead the creation, editing, and maintenance of critical technical documentation, including user manuals, system architecture guides, installation procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
SME Collaboration - Interface directly with engineers, operators, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to translate complex operational and system data into clear, actionable content.
Visual Communication - Develop and integrate high-quality visual aids, including system diagrams, network topologies, and service flowcharts, ensuring they meet rigorous formatting and accuracy standards.
Quality Assurance - Enforce and maintain documentation quality, conducting rigorous reviews for grammatical precision, clarity, consistency, and adherence to organizational style guides and regulatory requirements.
Administrative & Mission Support (20%)
Executive Support - Execute key administrative functions to support team leadership, including strategic calendar management, meeting coordination, and travel logistics.
Document Management - Manage the organization's document repository, utilizing SharePoint and other systems to ensure efficient version control, configuration management, and document lifecycle management.
Communications - Prepare and format high-level reports, briefings, and correspondence for internal and external distribution, ensuring a professional and consistent voice.
Required Qualifications:
Experience - Extensive, proven experience in a dedicated technical writing role, supported by a strong portfolio of written work (e.g., manuals, guides, SOPs). Proven ability to ensure all technical documentation and official correspondence are fully compliant with DoW standards, rigorously applying the formatting, authoring, and management protocols defined in SECNAVINST 5216.5.
Technical Skills - Expert-level proficiency with document creation and publishing suites (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat) and familiarity with component content management systems.
Visual Skills - Demonstrated ability to create and edit technical graphics and illustrations using relevant software.
Organizational Skills - Exceptional organizational and time management skills with a proven ability to prioritize critical path tasks and meet aggressive deadlines.
Interpersonal Skills - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a high-tempo team environment.
Familiarity with SharePoint or other document management systems.
Familiarity with structured authoring languages such as XML or DITA.
This position may require occasional overtime and flexibility in work hours to meet project deadlines.
The role may involve some travel as needed for project-related activities.
