IT Lab Security Engineer*

Salary Band: $135,000 to $145,000

Job Description:
The IT Lab Security Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining security controls within ONI’s modernization lab environment to protect sensitive systems and data during global network modernization activities. This role ensures compliance with DoD 8140 cybersecurity workforce requirements, ONI security directives, and RMF standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and enforce security architecture for lab systems in compliance with DoD RMF and ONI security policies.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and implement mitigations.
  • Apply DISA STIGs and security baselines to all lab systems.
  • Manage PKI, encryption, and secure configurations for servers and network devices.
  • Monitor and audit access control; maintain logs for compliance and accreditation.
  • Support incident response and forensic analysis for lab-related security events.
  • Prepare security documentation for ATO packages and RMF artifacts.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must meet DoD 8140 (formerly 8570) baseline certification requirements for Information Assurance Technical (IAT) or Information Assurance Management (IAM) roles.
  • Required: Security+ CE or equivalent (e.g., GSEC, SSCP).
  • Maintain continuing education to remain compliant with DoD 8140 standards.
  • Deep understanding of DoD cybersecurity frameworks and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., ACAS, Nessus) and SIEM platforms.
  • Ability to implement and validate security controls for classified environments.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills for security reporting and audits.

Desired Qualifications:
  • CISSP or higher-level certification for IAM roles.
  • Familiarity with NAWCAD/NAWCWOLF Engineering and operations processes and programs
  • Experience in DoD or IC environments is strongly preferred

Education Requirements: 
  • Bachelors in Cloud Technologies, Computer Science, or related field (highly preferred).
  • Bachelor’s Degree may be substituted with High School Diploma with minimum 5 years relevant experience

  • Typical office environment:
  • Must be able to sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods.
  • Occasional standing while working in server rooms or at patch panels.
  • Must be able to lift and move moderately heavy equipment (e.g., routers, switches, servers) typically up to 30–50 pounds.
  • Manual Dexterity required for connecting cables, configuring devices, and handling small tools or components.
  • Must be able to view computer screens for long periods.
  • Ability to distinguish color-coded cabling and indicator lights.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or crawl in tight spaces for cable runs or equipment installation.
  • May require walking between different buildings or workstations.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with technical teams and end-users.
  • May need to hear alarms, server beeps, or equipment noises indicating issues
